A PHOTOGRAPHER, who endured two nights on the street in freezing conditions as a bodyguard to the Body Shop owner Anita Roddick during a television programme in support of the homeless, is now on his own mission to help others.
Bob Willingham, a photographer, former president of the Bude Rotary Club and town councillor — along with his wife Tanya — will be setting off across the channel on a mission to help refugees suffering this winter.
Along with ‘Optimus Prime’, their trusty VW T4 van, Bob and Tanya will be making the journey to Calais on Tuesday, December 12 and are hoping for as much help as possible in their mission.
Bob said: “We will be filling our van to the gunnels, we hope, with items to take to the refugees in Calais. Warm, waterproof winter coats — especially small and medium sizes — men’s waterproof walking boots, sizes 38 to 45, socks and gloves. Can you donate any of the above?”
Members of Bude, Holsworthy, Barnstaple and other clubs are helping with donations, along with help from fellow photographers. Donations can be dropped off at Café Bellinis on Queen Street, Bude.
Bob added: “We will be delivering all items to the Care for Calais depot for distribution. Whatever you feel about refugees, I fail to believe anybody would be happy to think of another human being, being out in the cold and wet without adequate clothing, especially at this time of year. My experience on the street for just a short time opened my eyes to the suffering cold can bring, so I know that a donation of just one item will help.”
