LOCAL Cornwall Councillors are divided when it comes to the Post’s car parking charge campaign.
Cllr Adam Paynter, Independent Cornwall Councillor for Launceston North and North Petherwin, agrees the free parking scheme should be extended until restrictions have fully eases but his fellow councillor John Conway, Conservative Cornwall Councillor for Launceston South, says to extend the free parking could cause an increase in council tax.
Cllr Paynter said: “I think it would be good if parking charges were not introduced until later in the year to allow our town centres to get back on their feet. We are working hard to deliver schemes for Launceston town centre that will improve the look and feel of the town and encourage locals and visitors into the town. All of our shop keepers have had it really tough over the last year so need our support.”
Similarly, Cllr Shorne Tilbey (Cons) for Stratton, Kilkhampton & Morwenstow said: “I will support any matter that supports local business we are in a new council loads to sort out.”
However, Cllr Conway said with the holiday season approaching the income from car parking charges will help negate a need to increase council tax: “I believe car parking charges should resume. Car parking charges are an important part of council revenue.
“If charges are not made the shortfall in revenue would need to be made up by increases in council tax, which would hit those without cars and those who use public transport.
“The holiday season is upon us and it is only right that holiday makers pay their share.”
