THE ladies behind the Plastic Free Camelford initiative attended a recent meeting of Camelford Town Council to explain more about the group and to ask the council for its support.

Clare Monson explained that the group was set up following a conversation on the Facebook page, Love Camelford.

“Three of us want to enable Camelford to become ‘plastic free’. We decided to do something about it.”

They have set up a Facebook page, which has received a great deal of support.

She added: “We feel it shows a real level of concern.”

The group hopes to form the Plastic Free Camelford using the Plastic Free Coastline scheme, but to reach the particular status, there are a number of set procedures the group has to follow, including getting the support of the local town council.

Clare said: “What we need you to do is pass a resolution to support Plastic Free Coastlines first of all.”

This would involve the council being proactive in finding plastic free alternatives within the parish.

“It’s a way of leading by example,” she added. “We really feel it would be beneficial to Camelford as a whole. We think it would be really good for tourism and bringing a lot of interest to the town.

“Once we’ve got the full group together, we’re looking to speak to local businesses to see what barriers they face.”

Mayor of Camelford, Cllr Rob Rotchell thanked the ladies for attending the meeting, and said the matter would be discussed in full in order to reach a resolution.
