THE clerk of Bude-Stratton Town Council, Donna Bennett, has been asked by councillors to undertake a feasibility study looking into whether the council-owned Tree Fields site could be used for burials for residents in the Bude, Stratton and Poughill area.

Cllr Brian Dixon believed that it would be a great choice.

He said: “It would be an excellent use of council property and we’ve run out of space.

“At Stamford Hill, where it is, there’s sheep grazing at the moment but it’s a real nice, calming place. The council could use this as a self-funding idea.”

Mrs Bennett replied: “I’ve had a response from Cornwall Council about providing burial sites. They’ve said that there’s no statutory requirement to provide cemetries so there’s no immediate plan to provide them and if so they’re more likely to be in central areas.”

Cllr Heather Partridge believes that the idea will cause problems, saying: “It’s a really popular dog walking area, so dog walkers and residents will be up in arms about the idea.”

After Cllr Frank Partridge mentioned that he’d been told that such a site would need to have water and electricity, Cllr Paul Tilzey said: “I’m surprised that there’s no legal requirement to have a graveyard!”

Mrs Bennett replied: “Cornwall Council have put facts up saying that 75% of deaths these days are cremations.”

Cllr Norman Tucker asked: “A few years ago I thought that as a council we had to provide a burial site?”

Cornwall Councillor for Bude, Peter La Broy, said: “The idea is a thoroughly worthy one but I propose that the town clerk is tasked with a feasibility study to come back to the council?”

Cllr Lea Deely replied: “You’ve read my mind Peter, that’s exactly what I was thinking!”

The new mayor of Bude, Cllr Bob Willingham, took a vote with Cllr Peter Moores seconding Cllr La Broy’s proposal, which was carried.
