CORNWALL Council are bidding for funding from the Department of Transport to deliver the long awaited Camelford bypass.

Earlier in the year the bypass was nominated by the Peninsula Sub-National Transport Body (STB) as a priority scheme for funding consideration from the Government’s Major Road Network (MRN) programme investment plan.

This provides the best opportunity in over a decade to deliver this vital link for North Cornwall.

In July the council submitted a Strategic Outline Business Case to the Department of Transport. This showed a likely scheme cost of £42.4-million and Cornwall Council cabinet agreed a local contribution of circa £6.5-million. The council is now waiting for a commitment from government to support the further development of the scheme.

The bypass will ‘unblock’ the A39 as the main route from North Cornwall to North Devon. It will remove the congestion from Camelford, improve air quality, provide a catalyst for improving Camelford town centre and the local economy in the area, and support the development plans as set out in the draft Camelford Neighbourhood Plan.

Cormac have developed a bypass solution that meets modern standards as well as considering the needs of cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders along and across the bypass.

The preferred route alignment and junction strategy/location has been established and will be shown at a series of public exhibitions at the end of November 2019.

To find out more about the scheme and to see the plans, please come to meet the design team on the dates and venues, including Friday, November 29 from 12 noon to 9pm, main hall, Camelford Hall, PL32 9QZ; Saturday, November 30, 10am to 2pm, main hall, Camelford Hall; Tuesday, December 3, 11am to 8pm, St John’s Church, Delabole, PL33 9AA.

Public support is vital in procuring funding. People will also have an opportunity to influence the design by providing comments that will be taken into account by the design team.
