A PROJECT to restore milestones along one of Cornwall's ancient mainroads is being backed by Camelford Town Council, writes Amelia Chubb.

Ian Thompson of the Milestone Society is fronting a scheme to replace five missing markers and "spruce up" the remaining six markers, formerly located along Judges' Road.

Judges' Road was the main road from Camelford, along the Camel Valley, to Bodmin, used in the 18th century. It is the unique milestones which confirm the route, but over the years some have been lost and others damaged because of hedge maintenance techniques.

Mr Thompson said: "We plan to make five granite replicas to replace the missing milestones, and to clean and repaint the surviving original milestones so that they stand out more clearly and are less likely to be hit by modern machinery. We will also celebrate the other granite roadside features along the road."
