THE future of Holsworthy Carnival is in jeopardy unless funds can be raised to keep it afloat.
The committee has announced that this year will be the last time the historic event is held due to increased operational costs.
The occasion is well recognised in the carnival calendar and attracts participants from far and wide.
COST
Events are being held to raise the £1,500 needed for this year, but the committee is doubtful there will be any money left over for next year's, which is expected to cost at least £3,000.
The carnival was first proposed in 1899, but it wasn't until 1900 that it began.
Ever since then the carnival has grown; the Carnival Queen was introduced in 1929 and the Fairy Queen in 1935. On some occasions the carnival had to be cancelled, including during the war years and foot and mouth outbreak.
