While last week’s General Election was seen as a somewhat disaster for the Conservative party, in the Post area, the Tories bucked the national pattern and all held on to their seats.

The snap-election, called by Prime Minister Theresa May, ended in a hung parliament, with no party winning a clear majority.

Out of the 650 seats available, the Conservative party won 318 (a loss of 13 seats), Labour 262, Scottish National Party 35, Liberal Democrat party 12, the Democratic Unionist Party 10, Sinn Fein 7, Plaid Cymru 4 and the Green Party 1.

The North Cornwall seat was one of the last to be called, with constituents unable to predict a winner.

Despite a successful campaign by the Liberal Democrats for former North Cornwall MP Dan Rogerson, Scott Mann retained his seat for the Conservative Party.

Despite failing in his attempt to win back the seat, many turned out for the traditional ’pull’ on Saturday, which saw Mr Rogerson being pulled from Newport up St Thomas Hill to the town square where he was met by a large number of supporters.

Likewise in Torridge and West Devon, Geoffrey Cox secured the seat, as did Sherryl Murray in South Cornwall and Mel Stride in Central Devon.
