AFTER a five-year break, Whitstone Carnival came back and enjoyed fantastic support from visitors and villagers alike.

The schedule of events saw the village skittles evening being held on Friday, July 22, with ten teams of six competing for the highest score.

Players enjoyed the bar and pasties and the team who were the eventual cup winners were made up of Justin Uglow, John and Margaret Stanbury, Howard and Judith Ibbitson and Phyllis Walters.

On Saturday, the village turned out once again for the ‘Grand Carnival’. The event was very well supported and really proved the wonderful community spirit in Whitstone village.

There were a large number of children’s fancy dress walkers, tableaus, a steam traction engine and a pony and trap.

The results from the children’s fancy dress competition are as follows:

Aged five and under — 1, ‘George and the Dragon’, Henry Greenaway.

Aged six to 11 years — 1, ‘Jill the Horse’, Freya Bailey and Arabella Uglow.

Adults and children — 1, ‘Captain America’, Chloe Marie.

Most original tableau and ‘Best in Carnival Cup’ went to ‘Clowning around for Carnival’.

The carnival finished in the village hall where everyone was able to enjoy side stalls, which were kindly organised by the various charities and groups from the village. A bar and barbecue kept everyone refreshed.

The committee extended thanks to the judges Valerie and Roger Orchard, Sheila and Alan Mill and Maggie Cooper. Thanks also went to Hamblys, Whitstone, for the loan of their yard for tableau to set up.

The evening continued with a barbecue thanks to Jo and Tom Fowler, Julie Tucker and Margaret Short, a bar was also kindly run by Nick and Wendy Furse at the St Anne’s Hall. Whitstone Stores also helped support the event and Phil Tucker donated the printed prize cards.

Money raised during the week will be distributed to local organisations.

The carnival secretary, Charlotte Hooper, expressed her sincere thanks to everyone involved for all their help during a busy and successful event.
