Launceston
Probus Club
At our second July meeting Launceston Probus members were given an illustrated talk on Children's Hospice South West (CHSW) by Annabel Roberts.
Annabel started by saying that the hospices were initially formed to provide a local respite for children with life limiting conditions. This was to overcome the problem that at the time the nearest hospice was at Oxford. There are three hospices - the first was Little Bridge in North Devon, followed by Charlton Farm near Bristol and Little Harbour in Cornwall.

The aims of the hospices are to provide end of life care for children, as well as respite rest for families and bereavement support. An important role is to avoid children going into hospital, and the hospices are designed to look like home, giving the families the opportunity to either mingle or find a quiet place. Facilities include a dining room, playrooms, a conservatory and gardens. Among the other facilities are sensory rooms and music therapy for youngsters who find verbal communication difficult.
The hospices hold annual remembrance days for bereaved families, where families can put notes on a memory tree.
To cater for changing needs CHSW recently introduced home visits.
The hospices are mainly funded by donations from their local communities, with a number of events and activities. Only 12 per cent of funding comes from the government
Annabel concluded by answering a number of questions from members.
She commented that the demand for services is increasing, and this would be covered by more home visits and short stays
Chairman Christopher thanked Annabel for her presentation, and Probus members requested that a visit to Little Harbour should be organised.

The signs have now been purchased and will be erected in the near future in the car park.
Progress on the opening of the cemetery continues, quotes had recently been obtained for the laying of the path however it was resolved to defer the discussion until January 2026 primarily due to budgetary requirements. It was resolved however to purchase the granite posts for the gateway to the cemetery which would be fitted in due course.
It was further agreed that yellow lines on the junction leading into North Hill Village Hall car park would increase visibility as currently several close accidents have been reported. The request for yellow lines would be progressed through the Community Area Partnership Meetings over the coming months.
The next meeting is due to take place on September 1 at North Hill Village Hall. Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting, alternatively, should any members of the public wish to add any issues to the agenda for discussion, do email the clerk on [email protected]
