TURN to Starboard, based in Falmouth, is a registered charity using sail training to support Armed Forces personnel affected by military operations.
It helps retired and serving personnel and their families.
Sailing is known to provide elements that mirror the ethos of Armed Forces life, such as team cohesion, the challenge of adventure training and leadership skills and this helps serving, and retired, Armed Forces personnel, and their families, readjust after operational tours and assists them in meeting the unique demands placed on them by civilian life after a service life. The focus is on resettlement, reintegration and reinforcing a sense of value and belonging.
Courses range from day skipper to yacht master and include family sailing and tall ships opportunities. There are also opportunities for craftsmen to do tasks such as marine engineering, carpentry, painting, fundraising, corporate events, photography, film, graphic design, social media, copywriting, PR, marketing or administration.
Thanks to its supporters the programmes come at no cost to the beneficiaries. Launceston Community Market (pictured) meets every Friday morning at the Central Methodist Hall offering a wide range of local products and crafts and is proud to have helped by raising £200 for Turn to Starboard.
The total raised is now approaching £13,000 for more than 60 local charities and good causes.
