VISITORS, members and residents joined together to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Holsworthy Social Club on Sunday.

The club first opened as a public institute on Thursday, January 18, 1915.

Centenary celebrations for the whole community were held at the club’s building on Station Road on Sunday, where members still meet today. The piece of land was gifted to the town in 1915 by Horatio Higgs from Chasty.

The club is usually open to adults only, but arrangements were made to allow all ages take part in the family fun afternoon. The event was opened by Holsworthy Portreeve, John Addicott, followed by a barbecue, bouncy castle for the children and entertainment from Holsworthy Town Band and David Vaughan and his jazz band.

Derek Kidby has been secretary of the club for 30 years.

He said it was a ‘brilliant’ afternoon. Although it rained when setting up, the conditions improved in the afternoon and the sun shone.

Derek said: “It was a good afternoon and many people came and stayed for the celebrations and it was great to see so many children here too.

“People sat outside where there was a barbecue under the gazebo which was kindly leant to us. Inside the jazz band played, there was a draw and the town band rounded off the afternoon. Overall it was a brilliant day and we have had a request from the ones who came if we would run a fun day every year, which we are hoping to do.”
