THE Camelford committee of Cancer Research UK held their 40th annual meeting at the Fore Street Methodist Church recently and were delighted to hand over a cheque for £12,600.

In the absence of the chairman, Pam Boundy, local fundraising manager Rachel Turner chaired the meeting.

Honorary secretary Madge Walkey reported on the year’s activities, which have resulted in another very successful year for the charity. She said members were sorry David Flower, local photographer, was unable to attend the meeting and expressed the thanks of the committee to him for publicising the work of the committee at every opportunity. Thanks were also expressed to photographer Adrian Jasper for stepping in at short notice.

Madge said as a committee they were indebted to countless individuals and organisations that support the committee in so many ways throughout the year and to the residents of Camelford and district for their unstinting support. She said without their help the committee wouldn’t have been able to achieve the results they have.

Madge referred to two of the five founder members who still serve on the committee — namely Joan Goodman and Pam. Both have been stalwart members for 40 years and their presence at the meeting was much missed.

The honorary secretary concluded her remarks by saying the committee were now entering their 41st year of fundraising and were looking forward to continuing the work of the past 40 years.

Honorary treasurer Sally Moore gave a very detailed financial report and then presented Rachel with a cheque for £12,600, which she accepted, saying it was an incredible amount to have been raised by the committee during the past year. She congratulated the committee for their efforts and also expressed her thanks to the people of Camelford and district for their support.

Pam, Sally and Madge were then re-elected as officers.

Joan, Enid Andrews, Ang Goodman, Nicky Hill, Pam Lyons, Lynn Oliver and Jan Strafield were also re-elected to serve on the committee.

Then Rachel gave a very comprehensive and informative resume of the research currently being funded by Cancer Research UK and stressed the importance of the fundraising being done throughout the country in order to finance this research.

Rachel concluded her remarks by congratulating the committee on yet another successful year.
