LANEAST-based driving instructor, Colin Mullis, will spend even more time at the wheel as he’s joined Cornwall Blood Bikes, writes David Sillifant.

The Cornwall Blood Bikes is a charity dedicated to providing an ‘out of hours’ service supporting NHS partners and delivering essential items to NHS hospitals and services across Cornwall.

Colin has always had a passion for bikes, and this will allow him to combine his business with volunteering at the weekend,

Colin said: “I’ve always wanted to do it but due to time commitments and starting my own business I wasn’t able to. But now I’m established and have a bit more free time I’m looking forward to getting involved as I like being on the bike and helping other people.”

Colin has had to undertake a course with the charity as well as undertake a Advanced Rider Training programme and will start in December.

As a result, his opening hours will change. He’ll be available for driving lessons five days a week for the first three weeks of the month and four days for the final week. His rescheduled opening hours will be released in due course.

Colin said: “Cornwall Blood Bikes are a brilliant charitable organisation who make a big difference. You’ve got to have a riding qualification to be a rider although they can put you on a course, and I’ve done a lot over the last 12 months to qualify.

“All of the bikers do it voluntarily and combine it with full-time jobs. On the bikes we can get through traffic and get supplies to people as quickly as possible.

“I’m looking to do ten hours a week and I start in December. I’ll work from 5pm to midnight on Saturdays and Sundays although there are two-hour breaks on each shift. I’ll be parked at home and once the phone goes I’ll be told to go somewhere, which could be as far as Camborne.

“We’re always looking for volunteers so I urge people to get involved.”
