A record sum of money was raised for Marie Curie at a coffee morning in Boyton on Saturday, March 11.  Organiser, Jenny Smith, said how delighted she was that more than £750 had been raised for this very good cause.

Jenny told the Post: “We had a fantastic team of helpers and I am so grateful to everybody who came and gave so generously.

“I would especially like to thank the two Launceston businesses who supported us.  Jo Downs gave us a lovely large Polperro dish which we auctioned.  Charlie Bears donated a delightful soft toy for our Name the Bear competition, won by David Cooke with ‘Lucky’!

“Boyton’s print-maker, Sophie Fordham, gave a charming screen-print of ‘Sparrow Love’, bought by Colin Tinkler.  Beryl Barton baked a huge, beautifully iced lemon cake for the ‘Guess the Weight’ competition. It was 4lb 7oz and went to Toni Martin. The large jar containing 74 sweets was won by Sarah Stanbury.

“Agnes Colwill and Tim Smith sold Daffodil badges and raffle tickets at the door.  Rachel Ellacott, Vanessa Stanbury and Pauline Scott were in the kitchen providing refreshments.  Kathleen Dennis and Sylvia Duke were in charge of the ever popular Cakes and Savouries stall which raised nearly £200, thanks to all our wonderful bakers.  Bev Hunt led a team of Spice of Life volunteers from Boyton and North Petherwin who helped in the kitchen, on all the stalls and with the competitions.  Spice of Life organisers,Tara Melton and Andrea Richards, joined Boyton’s Shirley Bell marketing an extensive collection of Bric-a-Brac.

“Many past Boyton residents joined us as well as newcomers and friends from Launceston and elsewhere.  It was great, at last, to return to pre-pandemic levels of support for a most successful community event and a worthy cause.”

However, that wasn’t the end for this spectacular coffee morning as a further surprised awaited them on Monday. Jenny added: “Further donations came in after the event to bring the amount raised to this record sum. We are all delighted!”
