HOLSWORTHY town council’s fundraising coffee morning held on Wednesday, January 15, in aid of the mayor’s charities was a great social event for the town’s people.

That evening, during the town council’s full meeting, Mayor Cllr Jo Heaven said: “We held our coffee morning today. There was a good turn out and I want to say thank you to everyone that came along and helped. We took a good sum of £248.10 and after the cost of hall hire at £84 we made a profit of £164.10, which will go to Holsworthy Youth Club and towards the flowers in the town, my mayor’s charities for the year.”

Cllr Nigel Kenneally said he had been surprised at how much he had enjoyed himself: “I really enjoyed myself. It puts things in perspective when you look around the room and realise that for some of them that is the only time they get out and see people.”

Deputy mayor Cllr Helen Parker added: “It isn’t a great fundraising exercise, but it is a great social event and gives us chance to speak to the public about their concerns.”

The next coffee morning was due to be held in aid of the viaduct project but Cllr Kenneally suggested funds could go to the town’s namesake in Australia which is currently only an hour away from the bush fires ravaging the country. The assistant to the town clerk Kerry Wilcox noted councillor’s enthusiasm to provide support to those affected by the bush fires and agreed to look into making connection with the people of Holsworthy, Australia.
