ON Wednesday, March 29, from 11am until 2pm, another successful coffee morning was held, organised by three dedicated Camelford Leisure Centre members to raise needed funds, writes Helen Pusey.
Sheila Chequers, one of the organisers, said: “We are totally amazed by the generosity of the community; it is overwhelming.”
Eyes were immediately drawn to the delicious choice of homemade cake and scones, made by the three ladies. There was cherry cake, chocolate cake, rocky-road and flapjacks just for starters — there was so much to choose from!
People took part in the tombola with a good selection of prizes to be had. One popular game was ‘guess how many sweets are in the jar’, but the raffle really excelled. The donated gifts came from far and wide, including items such as Thornton’s Easter eggs, a bag of sports equipment, a cosmetic bag, stationary, biscuits, chocolates and wine.
All these were given by local people and local shops, including Londis Tintagel, Spar Camelford, Boots, Liberal Club in Camelford and Camelot Garage, Valley Truckle.
Visions Beauty donated a beauty voucher worth £10, while mobile hairdresser, Vanessa Allen, gave a voucher for a wash and blow dry. Cedarcroft nurseries, St Tudy, thoughtfully donated a trough of tulips, whilst all the major supermarkets gave gifts ranging from an Easter egg to a bottle of champagne and £15 of ITunes vouchers.
Other prizes were Screech Owl tickets for two, entrance for two to Heligan, a ticket for four people to the Eden Project, tickets for the Birds of Prey Park, tickets for two to Trethorne and even tickets to Newquay Zoo.
Mrs Chequers added: “We have kept a full list of those that gave at the centre so people can see the generosity for themselves; many thanks to them all.”
With everyone waiting patiently for the announcement of the raffle, it was the perfect time to sit and enjoy more homemade cake and a hot drink, all for £1 after a swim.
Jenny Adamson, leisure centre member, said: “The cake is the best in the world and the atmosphere today has been friendly and welcoming to all who have turned out on this grotty day.”
A book stall was available with all books reduced for the occasion — perfect for a rainy day!
It was certainly a time for the community to come together to support the leisure centre, while surrounded by fabulous cake. The event raised £621, with all proceeds going to the leisure centre.
