BUDE Coastguard Search and Rescue Team is warning members of the public to stay away from and report unusual objects, such as those pictured, seen on local beaches, after a series of dangerous items have been discovered recently.

It is advised that if any unusual, dangerous objects are seen on beaches, that the people who find them should call 999, ask for the coastguard and describe its location as accurately as possible. They will initiate the correct response for disposal.

This follows discovery of some objects that have been identified and correctly disposed of from beaches in the Bude area in recent months.

Most of these items are ‘Time-Expired Pyrotechnics’ (TEPs) of varying types and they present a ‘significant hazard’. Depending on their age and time at sea, they might not have any visible means of identification.

Also disposed of recently have been a spigot mortar and phosphorous marker from the Second World War. These can typically resemble a harmless silver tube. Both of these military items were destroyed with controlled explosions by the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.
