Tavernspite CP School, hosts of the recent Fair Trade Cup Football Tournament, and event organiser Sharron Hardwick would like to express their thanks to Kilgetty Co-Operative Food for their kind donation of Fairtrade bananas.
"The Co-op usually have a good selection of Fairtrade products, and only sell Fairtrade certified bananas. When we asked for their support, they kindly offered to donate one Fairtrade banana for each participating child, which was around 100. Schools and supporters all hope the Co-op's sales of Fairtrade will one day extend to the sale of Fairtrade sports balls, making them more easily accessible to the public," said Sharron Hardwick, Fair Trade In Football campaign founder.
The newly formed co-operative style organisation, Bala Sport, sell the Fairtrade sports balls online which were used by the 11 local schools in the Fair Trade Cup.
Buying Fairtrade certified items means producers and workers are guaranteed to get a fairer deal, with good workers rights, using: no forced or child labour, safe working conditions and methods which are best for the environment.
"We can all make a difference because the sale of every Fairtrade item includes a Fairtrade premium, this money goes to the local Fairtrade workers who choose to use it in their communities for development things like health care, education and more. Fairness is something which means a lot to local schools, having the support of a local business like the Co-op is very encouraging," concluded Sharron.
