A SPECIAL beer has been made to mark 100 years since the opening of the Public Institute of Holsworthy, now the Holsworthy Social Club.

The Public Institute, on Station Road, was built in 1914 and opened to the public on January 28 1915 by Alderman H Higgs JP.

It was Alderman Higgs who gave the land to build the Institute for use by the general public of Holsworthy and District, young or old.

Over the years, until Holsworthy Social Club was started in 1972, it was generally known as The Men's Institute — but as Holsworthy Social Club secretary Derek Kidby explained, only because men were its members anyway.

The building has been added to but still resembles how it looked when built. The billiard room, now known as the snooker room, had one table to play on when opened and acquired another in 1932.
