AFTER 75 years the Bude Music Society is closing its doors for good.

David Robinson, chairman of Bude Music Society, said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of Bude Music Society after 75 years of concerts. Beginning as Bude Gramophone Society after the War, BMS has given opportunities to young musicians to give recitals in North Cornwall at the beginning of their careers, and has also hosted more experienced musicians. We have enjoyed hearing them play — they have enjoyed our lovely countryside, sea views and traditional Cornish hospitality.

“The coronavirus effectively closed our two concert venues: the Minstrels Music Centre in Canworthy Water and the United Reformed Church in Killerton Road, Bude.

“This has come at the same time that four members of the present committee intended to step down. Invitations to members and friends were sent out asking for volunteers to take their place; interest was expressed but only one person was prepared to help.

“As nobody else was able to commit themselves to join the committee, formal closure has had to take place.”

The society’s remaining reserve funds will be donated to two local music charities — Sound Waves South West and the Bude Concert Orchestra — as both promote music in the North Cornwall area.

Mr Robinson added: “During the last decade we have been fortunate in having the distinguished pianist and musician, Allan Schiller BEM, as our president and we thank him for his great support and interest.

“Over the years there have been many wonderful people who have helped and supported the BMS; we thank them all for their time, talents and encouragement.

“Bude Music Society can rightly celebrate 75 years of high-quality music making. We hope that perhaps another society may emerge in the future, giving enjoyment to audiences and opportunities to talented young musicians!”
