In a groundbreaking effort to address the issue of climate change at a grassroots level, the Bude Area Community Jury on Climate Change is being established, bringing together diverse voices to deliberate and propose actionable solutions for a more sustainable future.

Every household in the wider Bude area will receive an invitation to join the Community Jury on Climate Change taking place this autumn. Letters are being mailed out to 8,500 households this week, inviting everyone in the house aged 16+ to put themselves forward for ‘jury service’, which will be a thoroughly engaging and educational experience for those selected.

The impacts of climate change, including sea level rise, remain one of the most pressing challenges the Bude area faces. The Community Jury is an innovative initiative to engage residents in an effort to address the local impacts of this global crisis.

The Community Jury will be comprised of randomly selected residents from various walks of life, ensuring a wide range of perspectives and experiences are represented in the process. Through open discussion and expert presentations, the jury members will deepen their understanding of climate change issues and, working collaboratively, they will propose practical measures to mitigate the impact of climate change and sea level rise in the area.

The Bude Area Community Jury is facilitated by Bude Climate Partnership (BCP) and funded by The National Lottery Community Fund.

BCP programme director Rob Uhlig explained: “The Bude Area Community Jury on Climate Change is a significant step towards localising the fight against climate change, and we hope to inspire other communities to engage in similar efforts. Using the collective wisdom and creativity of our residents, we hope the Bude area will become a model for effective, community-driven climate action.”
