THE community in Jacobstow came together last month to take part in a spring clean litter pick, clearing roadside hedgerows and paths of much rubbish — and now the children of Jacobstow School are taking a stand too.

Mary Carter, the footpath co-ordinator, organised the event, which took place on Wednesday, April 22. She was joined by four other volunteers — husband Mick Carter, Ann and Steve Connely, and Jeanne Gimblett.

Mary said: "We filled 25 black plastic bags with fast food containers, energy drink cans and bottles, farm rubbish, car bits and other horrid stuff.

"It all happens down the ditch from Eden Chapel. There were two foam cushions, 28 empty bottles of vodka and countless Red Bull cans. There was even a space-hopper!"

The group covered all the roads in Jacobstow, with the worst area being the road from Wainhouse to Canworthy Water.

Surprised at just how much rubbish there was, Mary and Mick spent four and a half hours each picking litter, while the others joined them for three hours each.

Mary added: "There was a bit that we could blame on the recycling lorry blow out, but the majority was from careless chucking out of transport."
