THIS year's Bude Citizen of the Year is Candy Baker.

Candy's mother and father spent much of their lives helping others, especially the sick and disadvantaged.

Consequently, at the age of 13 she was already on the Appeals Committee for the Local Cottage Hospital, having followed her father around helping people who suffered with tuberculosis and collecting monies for the district nurses as she grew up.

She left school at the age of 16 years to become a probationer nurse before the NHS was formed and has continued throughout her life either working in the health environment professionally or on a voluntary basis raising monies for charities which have supported health provision.
