THE team at Churchtown Cafe in St Teath swapped the warmth of their beds for the streets as they took part in a ‘sleepout challenge’ in aid of homeless charity St Petroc’s recently.

The team at Churchtown Cafe took part in the sleepout on Saturday, December 7 to raise awareness of those who are currently living homeless in Cornwall today.

Consisting of Kerri Kitto, Vicky Burden and Justine Smale, the team wrapped up in coats, hats and scarves and slept in the bus shelter in St Teath for one night.

Having gathered numerous boxes and bags of donations for homeless charity St Petroc’s, the girls said: “We wanted to try and put ourselves in their shoes for one night. We are the lucky ones, we have the love and support of family and friends. We have a home — we have it all, really. They have nothing, and must feel the world lacks love and kindness.”

The trio is encouraging everyone to reflect and to avoid ‘turning the other cheek’ when faced with the harsh reality of homelessness in Cornwall.

They said: “Think about that person on the street. If you’re too embarrassed to engage with them, support St Petroc’s to help them. Just try not to turn the other cheek, and find some kindness to give.”

Kerri, Vicky and Justine are still collecting donations for St Petroc’s, which can be dropped off at Churchtown Cafe in St Teath. They ask for donations of warm, clean items to wear, or even just a treat to brighten someone’s day.

The girls added: “We are so grateful for the generosity of the people who have donated.”

Kerri, Vicky and Justine hosted a Christmas lunch on Sunday, December 15 in St Teath Church Hall, where they asked customers for a donation to St Petroc’s in return for their lunch.
