THE basics of bread making where brought to life at Bridgerule recently, as part of the national 'Bake your Lawn' project.
Pupils from three local schools gathered at the Bridge Mill, Bridgerule, to celebrate the finale of their 'Bake your lawn' project which is promoted by the Campaign for Real Bread. Bude Junior, Marhamchurch Primary and Tamar Lakes Forest Schools had all sown wheat in their gardens during the spring then harvested, threshed and winnowed the crop to take to the mill.
There they learned how grain has been ground through the ages, first using hand-operated saddle querns followed by rotary querns, then larger millstones powered by draught animals and later by wind and water. They watched as the water wheel of the mill started turning to power the sack hoist, lifting their own sack of grain through the trapdoors while they followed up the stairs.
