Children and staff at St Mark's Primary School, Morwenstow abandoned the usual timetable recently in exchange for a choice of fabulous activities, led by staff, parents and friends in the community.
The children had a choice of 32 different activities during Monday to Wednesday, including cooking, arts and crafts, bricklaying to make a new sand pit, various sports, pond dipping, walks in the local area, drumming etc.
Working in small groups, the children had the opportunity to try up to three different workshops a day, learning new skills, gaining confidence to work with other year groups, enjoying a rich breadth of experience.
On Thursday, each class spent a session in the school's Nature Area classifying plants and minibeasts, and exploring moths, butterflies and their habitats. They worked alongside the school's partner scientists from the local community as part of their WASP project (Wild About Science Project). The exhausting but fabulous week ended with the opportunity to reflect and follow up on the learning that took place.
As you can imagine, the logistics needed very careful planning. Mrs Teresa Moule, a teacher at the school, spent many hours ensuring the timetable of events ran like clockwork and the children were all able to access a range of different skills. The school's supportive PTA helped to fund the materials for the many activities.
Janette Creber, Headteacher said: "A strong community spirit and teamwork enables this annual event to be one of the highlights of the year for both children and adults!"
