ON THE evening of Friday, June 15, Wesley Cottage, Trewint, held a special ceremony when Supernumerary Minister Rev Philip Seaton and his wife Pauline presented a cherished artefact for display in the museum.
This remarkable item is a set of what is believed to be John Wesley’s preaching bands, mounted in an old frame.
Rev Philip was handed these many years ago by his mentor Rev Edward (Ted) Houghton. The story of the bands is that when Wesley visited Maidford South Northhamptonshire, he left them behind and since then they have been held in private hands.
The Rev and Mrs Seaton came to Cornwall to attend the ceremony, which took place in the context of worship.
The curator/missioner Mr John Hogarth led the service in which Wesley hymns were sung and the district chair Rev Steve Wild delivered an inspiring sermon, which considered garments in the scriptures and how Christians are clothed in righteousness.
This was followed by the presentation of the preaching bands with a short speech by Rev Seaton. Rev Wild accepted them on behalf of the Cornwall district and presented Mrs Seaton with a bouquet of flowers.
Wesley Cottage is open for visitors until the end of October, Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am to 4pm. Complimentary light refreshments are also available. Further details can be found at www.wesleycottage.org.uk
