CORNWALL Council is introducing charges for disposing of certain types of waste at the Household Waste and Recycling Centres from September 1. The charges will only apply to waste which is not classified as household waste i.e. asbestos, plasterboard, soil/rubble and tyres. Local councils are not legally required to accept these types of waste free of charge and many others have already introduced charges. Providing this service costs Cornwall around £500,000 each year and the council can no longer afford to meet these costs. The charges will only affect a small number of people as not everyone uses HWRC sites, and many people who do use them will not be disposing of these types of waste. The change in policy means that the people who are disposing of these materials pay for their disposal rather than the costs being subsidised by all householders in Cornwall. This is the general principle the Council is adopting for all its waste services. For the full report, and a round-up of the area news and sport, see this week's edition of the Post.
