Members of Bude’s Royal Naval Association (RNA) have been celebrating as one of their shipmates marked their 98th birthday.

An association spokesperson said: “It is not often, in truth very rarely, that any organisation, let alone the RNA gets to celebrate a shipmate’s 98th birthday.

“In particular, one who looks so fit and well as our very own Alan Litchfield. So, at his invitation (and expense it should be added!) over 50 of his extended family and shipmates from the branch joined him at Bude and North Cornwall Golf Club on Thursday, December 29, on the day both to enjoy his company together with an excellent carvery and sweet if required.

“With a few shekels tucked away behind the bar from the branch resources, there were lots of smiles, humour and enjoyment. Ian and his team of smiley faces supported the event in excellent style — service top notch and Alan actually ended up with apple pie and (hot) custard as per his personal menu!

“With some very well chosen words from the branch chairman and a “groupie” photograph via our auctioneer, the future copy of “Globe & Laurel” will hopefully include a quality article in a future edition. Suffice to say and wish Alan, many happy returns of the 29th on your 98th!”
