CARTEN100 – the annual Cardiff to Tenby cycle ride comes to town tomorrow (Saturday).
This is the 10th anniversary of the ride from Cardiff and from the original four riders, over 1,700 will be attempting the challenge.
Accommodation in Tenby this weekend has been full for months, as they make the most of their efforts and spend the rest of the weekend in the town.
The last two years have had strong headwinds, so the riders are hoping for calmer conditions.
The riders will be finishing in Tudor Square, which along with the High Street, will be closed for the afternoon to allow the riders, friends and pedestrians to mingle safely and free from traffic.
The riders will all be sporting a 10th anniversary cycling shirt, which, through sponsorship, has raised over £36,000 for this year's chosen charities. The main charity for 2015 is Velindre Cancer Care, based in Velindre Hospital, but the organisers have decided to also support two local Pembrokeshire charities, Withybush Hospital Cancer Day Unit appeal and HOPE (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Physiotherapy).
The riders will also be fundraising and hopefully the ride will top the total for last year. To date the CARTEN100 has raised over £342,000 for charity over the 10 years.
In February 2015, the organisers were given an award in the National Welsh assembly, the Senedd, Cardiff, by Marie Curie Cancer Care, their 2014 charity, for the 'Outstanding Fundraising in Wales 2014'.
Peter Palmer, one of the organisers, said: "This represented the hard effort made by over 1,200 people in adverse conditions in 2014. Hopefully, 2015 will be a little easier for the riders. Also it is an acknowledgement of the huge amount of work done to run the event by our volunteers!"
Joining the ride for the second year will be a group of spinal injured riders from Rookwood, Cardiff. They will be using hand bikes and adapted tandems, with support riders. The team all made it to Tenby last year, but with a bigger team of over 10 riders this year, the challenge has gone out!
When the riders finish this year's event, they will all be given a finisher's shirt and meal in the CARTEN100 marquee on Tenby harbour, which will be hosted by the Tenby and Saundersfoot Lions. Please, if you are in the town on Saturday, go and cheer the riders in and enjoy the atmosphere. They will be arriving from 1 - 8 pm, with the bulk of riders arriving after 3 pm. The finishers will be easy to find in their tiger-striped Carten 100 tops and finishers t-shirts.
