THE village of Bridgerule has just completed another well supported Revel Week.

One resident of the village said: “And long may it continue.”

The week began with the crowning of the village queen, Ella Cholwill, who was ably assisted by her attendants Phoebe Lucas, Harry Cholwill (brother) and Lenny Mounce (cousin).

Ella gave a speech to officially open Revel Week and thanked everyone who had helped with her dress and flowers etc.

This was an afternoon of cream teas, various stalls, a raffle, ice-cream and lots of fun as people came along to see Ella crowned and to meet up and chat.

Shortly after this a united service was held at Bridgerule’s Methodist Chapel with the Rev Neal Street officiating.

During the service a ball of wool was tossed across the chapel to each and everyone causing quite a complicated knot but ‘combining’ all in this very special week which is known for bringing everyone together.

A spokesperson said: “It was a lovely occasion, and so nice to hear people laughing and clearly enjoying it.”

The week included an evening of ‘Wine and Wisdom’ with 19 teams. An ‘Open Show’ was held in the village hall including whopping cabbages, amazing embroideries, children’s entries and nicely risen sponge cakes.

As the evening proved to be wet the fun dog show had to be held inside the hall, but this didn’t deter the many proud owners from walking their various dogs around the quickly prepared show ring.

The hall was packed but all the dogs behaved impeccably.

Prizes were won and dog fancy dress worn with pride.

Arranged each year by the primary school, the ‘Ramble’ is always a great success and well over 200 people with their lively dogs took part over farmers’ fields, returning by tractor/trailer rides to a tasty hog roast and barbecue.

Thanks were expressed to the tractor drivers and the quad bike riders who kept a careful check on everyone.

The week also included a bingo evening and a skittle tournament, all very well attended with the top skittles teams continuing until late and committee members not getting home until after 1am.

There was a couple of flurries of rain on carnival day but the village has definitely had worse and it didn’t stop large crowds lining the roads to watch the procession pass through twice.

It was a carnival to be proud of with tableaux of Apollo space craft, the village’s very own Tamarside Singers dressed in early 1900s costumes, a Bohemian Rhapsody visiting float plus many more — not forgetting the two equestrian entries, dancing girls and many walking fancy dress entries.

The spokesperson added: “For a small village it was a spectacular procession with hours of work put into each one and grateful thanks going to all who took part. To the very hard working committee with a few new members we must all give a big thank you. It proved to be a superb week of fun and enjoyment.”
