After almost three years of COVID-enforced hibernation, Bude Carnival was ready to return with a big bang to celebrate it’s 100th year.

Bude Carnival has a long and proud history. Since the inaugural carnival back in 1920, the carnival has seen many changes. Up until 1938 it was a winter event, but once the Second World War had finished it resumed in August of 1946. It’s been held in August ever since, and most recently on the third Saturday of the month.

Chairlady of the Bude Carnival Committee Sarah Jose said: “It really was an amazing day and a fantastic carnival. You always wonder if people are going to show up, by they did. We had the most floats out ever and the streets were absolutely packed — it was fantastic.

“There are so many people to thank but I would like to say a specific thank you to our extremely hard working committee, they are a small group but have worked so hard to make this such a successful event.

As this year was an extra special event, the organisers wanted to dedicate it to two local people who have made Bude Carnival what it is today.

They are the late great Margaret Frost and Stu Bell. As these two amazing local heroes are no longer here to celebrate, it was up to the people of Bude to make it a carnival to remember — and they certainly did.

Sarah said: “We dedicated the carnival to former President Margaret Frost and Stu Bell, who was chairman for many years. We were delighted to welcome Stu’s wife and Margaret’s daughter to the carnival and they said both would have loved it, which was lovely to hear.”

During the event a moving presentation was made, selecting the new President. Margaret Frost previously held the title, but after her sad passing in December 2018 the role has remained vacant.

The committee were delighted to make the presentation of the President’s Medal to Mary Rogers during the 100th celebrations, who has been a committee member for more than 40 years.

Sarah said: “We just felt it was time, and what better event to present the medal at then our 100th. It was quite a special moment for the committee and we are delighted to have made the presentation to Mary, who has supported the carnival for more than 40 years.”

There is no time to rest however, as the committee are already preparing for next year’s event.

Sarah added: “Bring on 101! Thank you all.”
