HEAVY showers did not deter Rilla Mill village hall committee in its efforts to continue with its planned events on Saturday, July 28.
The sun shone when entrants were arriving for judging by Dai and Fran Jones of Bathpool, in a field near Rillaton, and thankfully photographs were taken before the downpour at the start of the procession.
In spite of the rain, Callington Town Band led the procession through Rilla Mill village to Parson’s Meadow bravely followed by the carnival royalty, plus the only visiting queen Isabelle Gribble from Launceston and the many entrants holding very colourful umbrellas. Onlookers clapped and cheered along the route and carnival princess Lizzie and prince Ollie supported by attendants Toby and Ostara were duly crowned by the 1995 carnival queen Demelza Carthew.
The afternoon continued with the model raft race, in which 26 models were entered, and a duck race plus a variety of stalls and competitions, BBQ etc. and Callington Town Band entertained throughout the afternoon.
Thanks were expressed by the hall chairman Andrew Davy to all who entered the carnival, to everyone who attended the events in spite of the weather, Callington Town Band, the judges, duck sponsors and to all who assisted in any way to make it such a successful day once again.
The committee hopes to get even more entrants next year.
