Emma Humphrey, from Nottingham, and Heather Wright, from London, will be known as the ‘sisters with blisters’, as they tackle a 130-mile walk from Barnstaple to Land’s End in August, in aid of national charities Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Mind.
Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust aims to improve the lives of those that have been affected by cervical cancer in some way, and are hoping to one day make the disease a thing of the past.
Mind is a charity that supports and advises those with a mental health problem, whilst raising awareness and an understanding of mental health issues.
Emma and Heather both have professional and personal connections to the charities they are supporting. Heather is a mental health nurse, whilst Emma is hoping that soon she will be going into medicine as a career.
Emma said: “What we want to do is break down the barriers and raise a profile of mental health.”
Aside from the scenery that Devon and Cornwall is lucky to have, the sisters chose the region because of the clear challenge that it will have in store for them during their walk.
Known for its steep hills, rocky cliff tops and rickety pathways, Emma and Heather are sure that the region will test them to their limits and will promise them a mental and physical challenge.
The sisters will be using the region’s coastal paths as a main way through their route and for Emma, living near the High Peak trail is her only way to train for the walk in her area.
In July, Emma and Heather will be meeting in Devon to get a taste of the region’s temperamental paths.
Emma said: “I’m really excited, but also quite nervous — as anything like this can be quite daunting — but the response we’ve had on social media is really positive, and that’s helped a lot.
“The walk isn’t just about raising money, although that is very important, but it’s all about hearing the tales from people who have suffered from mental illness or cervical cancer, as well as the use of terminology surrounding the illnesses.”
Emma and Heather will be starting their walk for charity on August 27, and is expected to take up to nine days to complete.
