Robert Davies, of Buckeridge Road, Teignmouth, writes:
I have recently read one of your letters titled No, no, no to these Vans, from Susan Brown, of Haldon Avenue. Having lived most of my life in Teignmouth and a fellow campervan owner I find her comments insulting to anyone who wants to visit our beautiful town.
Ok, some of the campervan owners may not be to her liking but the majority of owners do spend money in Teignmouth and the surrounding area.
On many occasions I see people sat in their cars with a flask of the hot stuff and sandwiches. are we to ban these people as well? What happened to living in a free country that many of our late grandparents and parents died for?
Can't we all just appreciate that at some point we may not agree with others but if they are not breaking the law we should just let them get on with it.
Many people can't afford holidays abroad or even in the Uk, so having a vehicle that they can easily park up and enjoy time away from home should not be restricted.
Having posted the article on a VW Facebook site, I would like to pass on my fellow campervan owners comments:
l Shaking my head in disbelief. I'm sorry that my vehicle is self-contained and yours isn't love.
l No. This is bad!! We live to do this!!
l Some people do not even stop to consider the alternatives and effect on themselves. So the people In the van, spending within the town are there, not on a foreign holiday. Consequently, the so called ice cream stand that sold the ice cream she refers to couldn't exist. Locals who slate anything that increases or promotes tourism need to think again.
l I go down to Dawlish twice a year and stay on lady's mile in a static van, so I think I put a lot back in to the local businesses (Teignmouth, Torquay, Paignton and Brixham) so the rest of the year I can use my van!
l These people never consider that we might actually BE local! We use our van as our day to day family vehicle.
As you can see many people are annoyed at the comments and have suggested that a large VW campervan gathering takes place on the Point car
park or Haldon Avenue in the not too distant future in protest at them.
If Ms Brown is commenting about the large motorhomes that are parked on the seafront, and not small campervans, then she should choose her words wisely.
