MEMBERS of a beach management committee are spearheading a campaign to get Crooklets Beach, Bude, the recognition it deserves with a 2015 Seaside Award and is calling on the support of local businesses and residents to make it a reality.
The committee is made up of Martin Dorey, Deb Rosser and Nicola Hammond who are all working hard to enthuse local businesses and get support from their local contacts.
The trio got involved with the bid after they were approached by Jolyon Sharpe, North Cornwall District Council Senior Beach Ranger, who encouraged them to apply for the award as he felt it would be good for Bude.
Martin, who lives near the beach, said: "Personally I believe that a healthy beach is a very good thing, which is why I get involved in beach cleaning as much as I can.
"Since we began trialing the '2 Minute Beach Clean Station' at Crooklets I have had a vested interest in the well being of the beach too.
"Our beaches need all the help they can get, from clearing marine litter to encouraging responsible and safe use, to promoting them for tourism.
"I believe that doing something is better than doing nothing.
"There are so many people working really hard in Bude for the local beaches including Ian Saltern, Ado Shorland and the Widemouth Task Force group applying for a Blue Flag for Widemouth and it's a privilege to be able to do my bit — I am sure Nicola and Deb would agree with me."
The award is important not only for the beach-goers, but also for everyone else in the town and the committee is keen to get that message across as they look for help towards funding.
