‘I LOVE the bells’ one councillor exclaimed during the April 1 meeting of Camelford Town Council when discussing a grant request from the Friends of Lanteglos Church for Bells.
Cllr Claire Hewlitt began discussions, saying: “I love the bells, and I miss not hearing the bells. I am not a church-goer but church bells are very much part of ‘Britishness’ I think — they are just symbolic of what we are so I think we should support.”
Cllr Aaron Scawn added: “Claire has said everything I was going to say, other than, do we have anything left in this current [budget]?”
It was confirmed that there was nothing left in the current budget but Mayor Cllr Rob Rotchell added: “There is more than sufficient to cover this grant in the new budget.”
Deputy town clerk Amanda Lash confirmed that the grant money could come from the next financial year’s budget.
Cllr Mike Coombes proposed the council provide the grant money, seconded my Cllr Ayla Ackroyd-Johnson. The vote was unanimously in favour.
