PLANS for the development of 58 new dwellings on the Camelford Primary School site were deferred at the Cornwall Council Plans Committee meeting on Wednesday, July 22, to allow time to look at other possible uses of the site.

A proposal was made by Cornwall Council for the construction of 58 houses with associated demolition and infrastructure works. The plans submitted by the council showed a proposed layout, indicative house types, sections and street scenes.

Camelford Primary School is set to relocate to the grounds of Sir James Smith's School in the town, and Cornwall Council, in its report, said the site was an ideal location for the possibility of developments.

The overall size of the site is 3.83 acres with 1.55 acres of this being playing fields. The site is relatively flat and is located on a high point in the village. Therefore, attractive to most kinds of development, this being why the plans have been deferred for other uses of the site.

There are a number of school buildings and outbuildings on the site, which are a combination of some dated back from the early 20th century and other more recent ones being add-ons.

Although there was a recommendation to approve the application, the committee voted to defer the plans to allow the investigation of other uses of the site.
