DOUG Pearce, who is celebrating his 100th birthday in Camelford, was born a few months after the Titanic sank. The Battle of the Somme began on his fourth birthday, but he was more than old enough to take part in the next World War. He turned 32 in Normandy, having just survived the D-Day offensive.
By this time, he was married to Peggy and had one son, Andrew, with another, Robin, on the way. Doug rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and was later awarded the Territorial Decoration.
