CAMELFORD has been lit up for Christmas 2019 following the town’s winter festival.

The annual Christmas lights switch-on and fireworks display took place in Camelford on Saturday, November 30, where mayor Claire Hewlett and Camelford Carnival fairy queen, Daisy Pooley, had the honours of switching on the lights for the festive season.

Speaking about the event, Cllr Hewlett said: “It was a cold evening, but most importantly it didn’t rain. It was fantastic to see the town packed and the isolated snow showers just outside the Masons Arms didn’t put anyone off getting a lovely bit of hog roast. Everyone was happy and having a good time.”

The evening started with a lantern parade, led by Camelford Town Band who were on ‘top form’, and the congregation stopped to sing carols at various points en route to the band stand.

Smug Jars went down so well at Music in the Park earlier in the year that they were invited to perform at the winter festival. Cllr Hewlett continued: “I thought it was a real bonus to have live music and they were brilliant.”

In amongst all the other festive activities taking place, there was also a Santa’s Grotto and some reindeer to bring Christmas to life.

Cllr Hewlett added: “The lighting committee and volunteers delivered a fantastic display. They’re a great bunch of people who work their socks off every year to make sure it’s all done on time. Thank you so much.

“Camelford royalty, Daisy Pooley, did a great job of turning the lights on. I’m not sure who was more excited, Daisy or me!

“The fireworks were fabulous. I think it’s the best display around, although I might be slightly biased.”
