THE SACRIFICES of many in numerous conflicts, old and new, were remembered on Sunday in services and parades throughout the 'Post' district. Record crowds were reported as the casualties in Afghanistan reminded those who had forgotten to pay tribute to those who gave life or limb to help preserve our freedom — those who gave their tomorrows for our todays.
The parade started at Bowood Golf Club entrance at 10.30am, led by Camelford Town Band. David Goodman was the Parade Marshal. The Royal British Legion standard was carried by Phil Williams and the Royal British Legion Women's Section was carried by Margaret Shillaber.
A total of 26 organisation took part in the Parade, all from the Camelford area.
At the War Memorial at Lanteglos Church the 26 wreaths from the organisation was laid (an increase on last year). The RBL Wreath was laid by Jim Baker who was in DCLI and was a dispatch rider. He was also for many years the Standard Bearer for the RBL.
Vanessa Juleff laid a posy of poppies, in memory of her partner Ben Poole who was in the Royal Marines and was killed in Afghanistan two years ago.
The two minutes' silence was held, the bugler was David Jasper who has played for the town for many years. The Roll of Honour was read by David Moore and the service was led by Rev Jim Benton-Evans.
The parade went into the church for a service and there was standing room only. The readings and lessons were read by the young people.
Rev Doreen Starey-Delacassa did the address which was interesting. She also gave the history of the Union Jack, how it came to be red, white and blue (red England, blue Scotland and red Ireland). The children sat on the floor and they made their own Union Jack.
During the part of the service set aside for the collection, eight young members were led out by Mrs Peggy Ellison, the Brownie Leader and Mr Cameron Valentine, honorary secretary of Camelford Royal British Legion.
They visited the graves of the war dead and placed remembrance crosses by each headstone.
Poppy Organiser Margaret Shillaber said a big thank you for all who helped make the parade and service go so very well. The church looked fantastic with all the flower arrangements, and the weather was so very kind after the previous day's weather.
There was a good attendance for the Remembrance Service and parade at the War Memorial in Delabole on Sunday.
Members of Camelford Town Band played and wreaths were laid on behalf of a number of organisations, these being Mrs Rose Meakin on behalf of the Delabole branch of the Royal British Legion; Mr Chris Hore for the Royal Naval Association; Mrs Liz Henderson on behalf of St Teath Parish Council; Mr Rob Round for the Rotary Club and Mr Chris Whiteman for the Aden Veterans.
Standards were carried for the Delabole RBL by Firefighter Shane Trewin, escorted by Mr Maurice Stacey, and for the RNA by Crew Commander Clyde Ferguson, escorted by Mr Chris Hore.
Other organisations represented included the local St John Ambulance branch.
The band then led the parade to St John's Church for a service.
The service at the War Memorial and the church was shared by Sue Wilcox, Lay Preacher; Rev Bryan Ede and Father Bryan Storey.
