THE Morwenstow Methodist Chapel’s annual Bumper Feast, a big barbeque, was held on July 7, with approximately 90 people attending.
David Miles and Sharon Olde were kept busy cooking, serving chicken joints, sausages, belly pork and chilli con carne, while other members and friends served new potatoes, salad and bread rolls.
These were all cooked, served and eaten in the garage, where tables and chairs had all been set up for the occasion. They then went into the Wesley Room, where a huge display of mouth watering desserts were served, followed by tea, coffee and squash for the children.
The chapel was also set with tables and chairs, where people could sit, relax and enjoy. After everyone had all filled their tummies, they were delighted to have Nicky Olde with them, who gave a talk, slide and video show on her experience in Cambodia.
Nicky was lucky enough to gain a place in a government voluntary service overseas scheme for young people, aged between 18 and 25. In order to go, she had to raise £800, which she did by hosting a coffee morning and baking cakes.
Nicky was in Cambodia for three months, where she was involved in weekly youth clubs teaching English and offering careers advice. Her careers team also put on an event, where the job centre, TVET and the local head master spoke to the local community.
The main aim of Nicky’s time spent in Cambodia was to try and get individuals back into education. A tractor fixing course was put on for locals to teach them new skills and try and get them back into school or college.
Nicky is now back in Cornwall and feels her time in Cambodia was well spent helping the young people there and also in teaching her new life skills too.
