UNDER the direction of Graham Williams and with organ accompaniment by Simon Brett, the renowned Callington Singers have recently returned from a very successful fundraising tour of the island of Menorca.
The choir performed three concerts to packed audiences in the Cathedrals of Mahon and Cuitadella and the Anglican Church of Es Castell. The choir
performed works by Handel, Tchaikovsky, Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart amongst others.
The performances were organised in co-operation with the Rotary Club of Menorca in support of the LifeStraw charity. The LifeStraw is a small device which can filter and purify water from any source. The straws are sent to countries in which diseases such as Cholera are endemic and are responsible for saving many thousands of lives each year. If you would like more information about the charity, or wish to make a donation, please see the website http://www.vestergaard-frandsen.com/lifestraw.htm">www.vestergaard-frandsen.com/lifestraw.htm.
Voluntary donations, which were received at the Callington Singers' performances, raised a total of over £1,000 in aid of the LifeStraw charity and the choir now intends to adopt this charity and raise more money here in the UK. To this end the choir will be hosting a singing workshop at St Martin's Church in Liskeard on September 19. All are welcome to come along and learn to sing Fauré's Requiem and give a performance in the evening. The aim of this day is that each ticket for a singer or audience member will provide a LifeStraw for someone in need in developing countries. Details will shortly be available at the Callington Singers
The Callington Singers have extended their thanks for the warm reception which they received in Menorca; in particular, to the Rotary Club for their hospitality and for providing the opportunity to raise money for such a worthy cause.
