BUDE Ladies 'A' team travelled to Penzance for their first match of the season, writes Joan Coney.

Ann Mason (captain) and new team member Dorine de wit, with Rachel Stacey and Penny Tilsey all found it hard to find their form on the unfamiliar astroturf surface, and only managed to win sets against the Penzance second pair. Final score Penzance 'B' 9, Bude 'A' 3.

However, the following week the same team had a home match against Truro 'B' and both pairs played well. Rachel and Penny won both their matches in two sets, and Ann and Dorine beat the Truro second pair in two sets and pushed the first pair to a very close second set but were unable to win it. Final score Bude 'A' 8, Truro 'B' 2.

Bude Ladies 'B' team had a home match against Veryan in very windy conditions.

The Bude team of Wendy Ball, Gretel Shaw, Rachel Drew and Joan Coney (still standing in for injured Charlotte Polhill) were able to cope with the wind better than the Veryan ladies and won all their matches, with Rachel and Joan losing one set against the first pair but winning the match tie break. Final score Bude 'B' 10, Veryan 1.

Bude Mens 'B' team had a convincing win against the visiting Newquay 'D' team. Mike Keat (captain) and Andrew Troop, with John Brooks and Andrew Barnes all won in straight sets, only conceding 14 games in the whole match. I wonder if that will be the record to beat this season? Final score Bude 'B' 10, Newquay 'D' 0.

Bude Mens 'C' team started the season with a match against Veryan in which Brown Cardoo (captain), Peter Drew, Tom Hunter and Andrew Troop were unable to win any sets despite fighting hard! Final score Bude 'C' 0, Veryan 10.

The team's second match was at home to Launceston with the partnership of Mike Barnard and Tom Hunter winning both their matches. Brown Cardoo and Oscar Reeve lost to the Launceston first pair but forced the second pair to a match tie break, which they won giving the team valuable points! Final score Bude 'C' 8, Launceston 4.
