THE women’s section of the Royal British Legion Launceston branch have been busy recently.

The ladies have been fixing 100 large handmade poppies onto 100 trees and lampposts around Launceston, as part of their efforts to mark the centenary year of the end of the First World War and for this year’s Poppy Appeal.

The poppies were made along with the magnificent poppy cascade, that has recently gone on display at the war memorial in Launceston town square.

The ladies have made 500 poppies overall, with 400 making up the cascade, and the other 100 being used to create a daily reminder of remembrance for the community, having been dotted across the town and down the town’s link road.

The group have been making the poppies since January, and finished the grand poppy cascade at the end of September. The 20 foot long cascade currently dresses the war memorial in the town square, creating a fitting and moving tribute to all those who served and sacrificed their lives during the First World War. Local businesses have also been given the opportunity to sponsor a poppy for £10.

The poppies will be able to be seen around Launceston for a couple of weeks, after which the cascade will be exhibited at Launceston Library.
