THE?Bude WI joined in the celebrations with Bude at War, by running a cake and preserves stall on Market Street.

The president, Cynthia May, announced this at their monthly meeting held on Tuesday, September 11 at the Bude Methodist Church Hall. She was delighted to inform the 79 members and two visitors present, that after securing the first prize at the Royal Cornwall Show, Bude WI’s members had excelled themselves again winning the Holsworthy Show, gaining the most points and the trophy for the overall score and winning the bowl for the best display.

The Royal Cornwall Show exhibit had been reinstalled for the visit to Newquay by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. Bude president, Cynthia May, and programme secretary, Carol Sparham, had the opportunity to be introduced to their Royal Highnesses, who admired Bude WI’s exhibit.

Bude WI members were also busy visiting local places of interest during the summer — a visit to Lundy, on a very rocky ferry, was a different experience, enhanced by the knowledge of their guide, Frances Stuart. However, it has been agreed that next time, they will go by helicopter.

They have also visited Knightor Winery, Geevor Tin Mine and ran a stall at Bude Heritage Day, and a successful coffee morning in August, which raised £675.50 for the Cornwall Air Ambulance.

The guest speaker was local lady, Clair Roberts, the driving force behind the Bude at War enactment. Her retelling of local people’s reactions to the ‘invasion’ by the Texas Rangers into Bude during the WWII was funny, heart warming and sad. Thanks were given to Clair by Carole Edwards.

The minutes of the July meeting were read and approved, and following a discussion it was agreed that the Bude WI should lay a poppy wreath at the November memorial day. Also, Bude WI are organising a day to make poppies, which will be sold in aid of the Royal British Legion.

As usual, members had the opportunity to sign up for many and varied activities, from a mystery trip to a spa day and a free needle workshop.

The competition was an item from the 1940s, and what a display — lots of people have still got their ration books! The winners were Jackie Adams, second, Pat Harris and third, Brenda Dunstan. The flower of the month was won by Joan Lashbrook, second Pat Harris and third Brenda Dunstan.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 11. This will be the harvest festival event. There will be a pasty supper, a bring and buy of garden produce and entertainment. As usual visitors are welcome.
