CAMELFORD Young Farmers’ Club had a great day at Camelford Agricultural Show, with various competitions and activities getting everyone involved.
The sheep race was the first of many events that enticed the locals in the late morning, as judging of the group competition took place.
The race was a first for the club and the show. Heather Harper, Camelford Young Farmers’ secretary, said: “We couldn’t believe how well supported and enjoyed it was by the general public, despite the rain.”
Following this was the highly anticipated sheep shearing competition in the afternoon, drawing numerous people in the crowds to get involved and cheer the competitors on.
Winners were Fiona Carthew for the female class, and Joseph Cornelius for the male class. With 2016 being the first year of having a female class, both classes were well supported, with five competitors in the female class and six in the male class.
The Camelford YFC tent was full with colourful rainbow cakes, miniature gardens and enormous Yorkshire puddings. A total of 23 members competed in the group competition this year, which marks the highest number of entries in ten years and set the bar high, with judges, Neil and Sheila Bradley from Delabole, having some tough decisions to make.
Overall cup winners for this year were Abby Haddy and Sam Bradley.
Heather was pleased with how the show was going.
She said: “We’ve had a really good turnout this year; it’s been the best we’ve had for probably about ten years. The rainbow cakes have proved to be really popular.
“Although it’s been a soggy day, it’s been really fun with our competitions like the sheep shearing and the sheep race.”
The club enjoyed the company of ex members, the general public and family and friends visiting throughout the day, receiving numerous comments about how lovely the tent was looking.
Members also provided shelter from the ongoing rain with a hot cup of tea and coffee. All money raised during this year’s Show will be donated to Cancer Research UK and the Happy Hospital Children Fund, the club’s chosen charities for this year.
The club has had a very successful year, having won the overall cup at the recent Royal Cornwall Show, as well as winning the annual tug-of-war competitions and representing Cornwall YFC in the South West area final.
Additionally, a few weeks ago, the club won two cups at the annual count rally, the Sports Club and the Pentathalon Cup. Camelford Agricultural Show has only added to the club’s success.
