RESIDENTS living close to the site of supermarket refurbishment have complained about the ‘exceptionally dangerous’ situation they have experienced.
One Launceston Town Councillor, John Harris, submitted a formal complaint to Cornwall Council about the works being carried out to the town’s Lidl store.
Cllr Harris said works vans had been parked so that ‘people had to pull out on faith that nothing was coming you way’.
He added: “Hurdon Way was blocked completely at one point.”
The Lidl supermarket closed in August to enable extension and refurbishment work to be carried out. The store is being extended to house a new bakery.
It is set to re-open to shoppers on September 22.
Cllr Harris said: “I’m all for work to be completed as quickly as possible, but there should have been some monitoring of just how dangerous it became at times.”
According to Cllr Harris, drilling works on-site carried on until 11pm some evenings, which he described as ‘anti social’. This caused some local residents to vent their frustrations on social media.
One commented: “I do think it’s a joke, sawing, drilling, hammering till stupid o’clock with the Lidl doors and windows wide open so we can hear it when we’re trying to sleep, and blocking in our drive ways all down my road so we can’t even park up.”
Another wrote: “It’s ridiculous up there. I had to pull out onto [the] main road with poor vision as a lorry was parked on the corner, putting mine and my children’s lives in danger!”
Cllr Harris added: “There was a period of a few days where it was exceptionally dangerous and there was no monitoring going on or anything.”
A spokesperson for Lidl told the Post: “We were made aware of issues regarding parking at our Hurdon Road on Wednesday afternoon and immediately took steps to remedy this. We have spoken to the contractors on site and have ascertained that the problems were caused by the resurfacing of the car park, rendering work vehicles unable to park on the site. This has now been completed and all work vehicles are now safely parked on site.
“We would like sincerely apologise to local residents for the inconvenience caused and reassure them that no disruptive work will be taking place at anti social hours moving forwards.
“We look forward to welcoming customers back to their new and improved store when it opens on September 22.”
