BUDEHAVEN recently took part in the Cornwall Music Education Hub’s annual music festival for children and families in Pool.

Schools and nurseries from across Cornwall brought groups of children to take part in the workshops and an end of day parade.

Budehaven’s very own steel band ‘Steel Haven’ were asked to deliver steel pan workshops to primary and secondary school children throughout the day.

Students had an early 7am start, meeting at the school to load the van full of pans before travelling across Cornwall to deliver the workshops.

After a long day of teaching, the students then loaded the van once more to return to school to unpack the pans.

Some of the other highlights included workshops with the Lions of Zululand, Samba, Gamelan and an introduction to Bhangra music and dance by RSVP.

Tanya Moore, manager of the Cornwall Music Education Hub, said: “We have dozens of families and hundreds of children from across Cornwall coming to the festival and taking part in workshops.”

The 12-piece steel band made up of students between the ages of 11 and 16 was set up earlier in the year by head of Music, Bethany Wade.

Steel Haven has gone from strength to strength since being established, with several performances taking place in and around Bude, as well as developing a strong set list comprising of calypso classics and current chart hits.
